All teacher candidates desiring to teach Spanish in the state of New York are required to take the NYSTCE Spanish exam. The New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) were developed by the New York State Board of Education to ensure that all teachers have the knowledge and ability to effectively teach all students in the state of New York.
The NYSTCE Spanish exam is a computer-based test with 50 selected-response questions (40% of total test score) and three constructed-response questions (60% of total test score). The total testing time is 205 minutes. You must achieve a score of 520 to pass the exam. The test measures five areas of competency: Interpretive Listening, Interpretive Reading, Presentational Writing, Presentational Speaking, and Pedagogical Content Knowledge.
The Interpretive Listening competency includes 25 selected-response questions and accounts for 20% of the total test score. You will be given headphones through which you will listen to Spanish dialogue and will answer the selected-response questions regarding the passage.
The Interpretive Reading competency includes 25 selected-response questions and accounts for 20% of the total test score. You will be given several Spanish reading passages and will be required to identify specific details, summarize the central ideas, and demonstrate overall comprehension of the texts.
The Presentational Writing competency consists of one constructed-response question which will account for 20% of your total test score. In this written response to a Spanish text, you will compose an essay in Spanish demonstrating good understanding of the language through writing. This assignment allows the insertion of special characters. It’s recommended that you visit the NYSTCE website before your testing date to review the Character Selector tutorial.
The Presentational Speaking competency includes one constructed-response question which will account for 20% of your total test score. This assignment requires you to record a spoken response which will demonstrate your grasp of the spoken Spanish language. It’s recommended that you visit the NYSTCE website before your testing date to review the Speaking Assignment tutorial.
The Pedagogical Content Knowledge competency consists of one constructed-response question which will account for 20% of your total test score. This written assignment requires you to read several Spanish texts and present an instructional strategy to aid students in achieving a learning goal, explain your reason for using this instructional strategy, and describe an assessment strategy to evaluate progress and design future instruction.
