NYSTCE Multi-Subject

Teachers in the state of New York desiring the Multi-Subject teacher certification must pass the NYSTCE Multi-Subject exam for the grade level they wish to teach. There are four NYSTCE Multi-Subject exams for four different grade levels.

  • Multi-Subject: Teachers of Early Childhood (Birth–Grade 2) (Test Codes 211/212/245)
  • Multi-Subject: Teachers of Childhood (Grade 1–Grade 6) (Test Codes 221/222/245)
  • Multi-Subject: Teachers of Middle Childhood (Grade 5–Grade 9) (Test Codes 231/232/245)
  • Multi-Subject: Secondary Teachers (Grade 7–Grade 12) (Test Codes 241/242/245)

There are three parts to each of the four Multi-Subject tests. Each part must be registered for and taken individually. Part Three is the same test for all four grade levels; therefore, if you are desiring Multi-Subject certification in more than one grade level, you only need to complete and pass Part Three once. A passing score of 520 must be achieved on all three parts of the computer-based test in order to receive this certification.

Part One: Literacy and English Language Arts (211/221/231/241) is the same format for all four grade levels but has age appropriate content for each one. This part consists of 40 selected-response questions and one constructed-response question. The four areas of competency on all four tests are Knowledge of Literacy and Language Arts; Instruction in Foundational Literacy Skills; Instruction in English Language Arts; and Analysis, Syntheses, and Application. The Analysis, Syntheses, and Application contains the one constructed-response question. The selected-response questions combine for 70% of your total score and the one constructed-response question is 30% of your total score. You will have 2 hours to complete this test.

Part Two: Mathematics (212/222/232/242) is formatted differently for all four grade levels but they all are comprised of 40 selected-response questions and one constructed-response question in the Analysis, Syntheses, and Application section. On all four exams, the selected-response questions combine for 80% and the one constructed-response question accounts for 20% of the total test score. Reference materials provided include mathematical definitions and formulas appropriate for each grade level exam. You can locate these reference materials on the NYSTCE website. A calculator is not allowed for the Early Childhood and Childhood levels. The Middle Childhood and Secondary Teachers exams require you to bring an approved graphing calculator for this test. The NYSTCE website provides a list of approved calculators. The Early Childhood test includes five areas of competency: Number and Operations; Operations and Algebraic Thinking; Measurement, Geometry, and Data; Instruction in Mathematics; Analysis, Syntheses, and Application. The Childhood exam for grades one through six also include five areas of competency: Number and Operations; Operations and Algebraic Thinking; Measurement, Geometry, and Data; Instruction in Mathematics; Analysis, Syntheses, and Application. The Middle Childhood test includes four areas of competency: Number and Quantity; Algebra and Functions; Geometry and Statistics; Analysis, Synthesis, and Application. The Secondary Teachers exam includes four areas of competency: Number Systems, Algebra and Functions; Geometry and Statistics; Analysis, Synthesis, and Application. You will have 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete this test.

Part Three: Arts and Sciences (245) is the same test for all four grade levels. It is comprised of 40 selected-response questions. The three areas of competency are Science and Technology (40%); Social Studies (40%); and Fine Arts, Health and Fitness, Family and Consumer Science, and Career Development (20%). You will have one hour to complete this test.

If a passing score is not achieved on any of the three parts, there is a waiting period to retake it. There is a 60 day waiting period for Part One and Part Two. Part Three requires a 30 day waiting period before attempting the test again.
